will depend more on volunteers. darcy spencer is live in college park tonight to explain the impact on public safety. hi, darcy. >> reporter: jim, we're live outside a branchville fire station. this is one of the stations that's going to be losing its career personnel. i spoke to a woman who's lived here in college park for decades. this station has responded when there have been medical emergencies with her family members. they're concerned about these changes. fire officials announced that career personnel are being pulled from four fire stations in the county and relocated to other stations. the fire chief told me in a phone interview that it's about balancing resources and tough budget times. >> while we're coming out of four rotations with all of the career staff, we're enhancing staffing at nine other places. >> reporter: but the volunteers at the stations that are seeing reductions in personnel are concerned that it could jeopardize public safety. the president of the branchville volunteer fire station tells me chances are between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., no one will be here to answer

county firefighters want to make sure families are thinking about safety. darcy spencer flif glen arden tonight with that story. >> reporter: this was just devastating news from this community that was already dealing with a horrible loss. this is what's left of the home that was destroyed by that fire early thursday morning. it took the lives of these young children. take a look here. right in front of the home, a single teddy bear left here in memory of these children. prince george's county fire officials say they're stepping up efforts to make sure every home in the county has a working smoke alarm. the fire here on leslie avenue in glenarden claimed four lives. a father and his three little girls ages 4, 8 and 11. earlier today fire destroyed this home on berry road. residents got out okay but their little blind dog couldn't find his way out. he was rescued and given oxygen which saved his life. both of these tragic fires have one thing in common -- there were no working smoke alarms in either home. >> very disturbing over the past couple weeks we've had several fires where we foun
ago. darcy spencer has his story tonight. >> the whole blast went into my arm. >> reporter: he shows a blast left in his arm when he was shot with a shotgun 21 years ago. the same gunman killed his wife, sharon. jerome calvary lewis was charged and acquitted in the shootings by a jury. any doubt that this was the guy who did it? >> no doubt. >> reporter: last friday, he was driving and listening to the raid yes when he heard that name from long ago. charged with murder two in connection with a fire at his home that left 4-year-old samurai jenkins dead. >> then they said his name, jerome calvary lewis, and it just -- i couldn't believe it. i almost -- i didn't swerve or anything, but it just shocked me. >> reporter: he pointed to lewis as the triggerman who shot him and his wife, leaving their two young daughters without a mom. but a jury found for lewis. articles point to an alibi witness who says she was with him at the time of the murder and a lack of dna evidence. the reports say lewis took the stand in his own defense. >> my anger, if anything, is about this little girl dying. it

. archaeologist charles spencer. this sea of mesquite and cactus that you see below here was once the reservoir impounded by the dam that stretched nearly half a kilometer from that cliff face on that side all the way over to this cliff face over here. at its peak, the reservoir surface area equaled 40 football fields. keach: spencer has determined the reservoir's size by measuring the silt that had built up behind the dam. we're behind the dam now, walking through a channel cut right into the silts that were deposited behind the structure. these silts that you see on both sides were brought in here by the water that flowed into the reservoir. when the water hit the dam and stopped, the silts were dropped and deposited in a series of layers. keach: the silts show just how deep the dam once was. the top of this mountain of sediment would have been the floor of the reservoir. spencer: it dawned on me after a few days that what i was dealing with here was an engineering feat, the magnitude of which was hard to grasp at the beginning. the planning, the foresight, the organization that was required
